Sick & Safe Leave laws ensure that team members are provided paid time off to care for themselves and/or their family members for various reasons including illness or injury, abuse or assault, and emergency closure of a family member’s school or place of care; qualifying reasons may depend on the specific ordinance.  At this time, there is no federal Sick & Safe Leave law, but Centerspace does operate in markets which have passed these laws at a state or local level.

Centerspace’s Paid Time Off (PTO) plan satisfies the requirements of Sick & Safe Leave laws for our full-time team members who are eligible for PTO.  Part-time team members working in the following locations are covered by the ordinances outlined below:

Colorado:

Under the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, paid sick leave is provided to team members to be absent from work for the following reasons:

  • The team member has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventative medical care.
  • The team member needs to care for a family member who has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventative medical care.
  • The team member or family member has been the victim of domestic abuse, sexual assault or harassment and needs to be absent from work for purposes related to such crime.
  • A public official has ordered the closure of the school or place of care of the team member's child or of the team member's place of business due to a public health emergency, necessitating the team member's absence from work.

Part-time team members accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours.  This accrual begins upon hire and paid sick leave may be used as it is accrued.   Accrued paid sick leave may be carried over into subsequent calendar years.

Centerspace will not permit retaliation against any team member who requests or uses paid sick leave, and team members have the right to file a complaint with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment or by using the steps outlined in Centerspace’s Whistleblower Policy if paid sick leave is denied by Centerspace or the team member is retaliated against for exercising their rights under the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act.

Minneapolis & St Paul, MN:
